Forgiveness

A friend asked me this via MySpace:

Dude random thing do you believe in regret and forgiveness man? Cuz idk most people believe in forgiveness man but they don’t know why, I think it’s pretty stupid to believe in something and you don’t know why.

My response:

I believe in both, yes.Regret, i think u kno wat i means. Some ppl will have it, some ppl wont.Forgiveness, to me, is acknowledging that someone regrets wat they did to u. If u dont feel like the person regrets it, then u dont forgive them. At least not in a full sense; it’ll just be one of those, i’ll let it go for now things. When they come up and say, hey, i kno i was a dick (or w/e) n i want to apologize b/c it wasnt cool, u dont deserve that, i was mad, etc. When they can admit it and tell u that they r genuinely sorry, that is when u can wholeheartedly forgive them. That is exactly wat confessions are for us in the Church. U confess the wrongs, feel the remorse for having done them, and once the priest says “i absolve you of your sins. in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. go in peace.” it is forgotten. it never happened. it won’t be held against u. assuming u did feel the remorse. That is the key to a confession and, for me, forgiveness in general.
As for WHY i choose to forgive ppl, it’s simple: I want to be forgiven for the wrongs i do too. “Do unto others as you wish them to do unto you.” I try not to hold anything against anyone because i kno i’ve hurt ppl too, and i do feel bad about it. I completely regret hurting anyone. So i forgive others in the hopes that i might be forgiven. :)
